The Mughal (Mongol) Empire, (descendants of the Timurids) was founded by Babur in 1483 and was the Imperial power over 1.2 million square miles of the Indian subcontinent until 1862. The classic period started with Akbar’s reign, but by the early 1700’s the empire began to disintegrate due to wars of succession, the rise of the Sikhs and British colonization.
Surat (or Surya) is a city within the State of Gujarat, and was 1
st
mentioned in the Sanskrit epic: Mahabharata, possibly as early as 400 BC.
It was ruled by Hindu Kings before it was captured by Qutbuddin in 610 AD. The Parsis settled there in the 8
th
century and the city prospered as it lay along the Silk Road between Gujarat and Iran.
The modern city was founded circa 1496 by Gopi who called it Suryapur (City of the Sun).
The city was burned by the Portuguese in both 1512 and 1530 but was rebuilt and became the chief commercial city in India.
An Imperial mint was established and in 1572, Akbar invaded and took over.
In 1608 the East India Company from Great Britain began docking their ships there, and further on in the 17
th
century, it lost some of its stature to Bombay.
It was sacked and by Shivaji in 1670 and in 1759 the British retook control.
It, along with the rest of India, gained its independence in 1948.
Roshan Akhtar was Mughal Emperor from 1719-49, was born in 1702 in Ghazna, the son of Khujista Akhtar and Qudsiya Begam, and succeeded Shah Jahan II. Since the overthrow of Farruksiyar in 1719 there were several emperors the briefly ascended the throne, but behind the scenes the Sayyid Brothers were in control and they chose Roshan as the new emperor. In 1720, Barka, the Commander in Chief of the Mughal Army was assassinated, and when Roshan fully took over the Sayyids were overthrown. In 1738, Nadir Shah began his invasion of Afghanistan and India, but it wasn’t until Roshan died the he became the new Emperor. It is said that when Roshan heard his good friend and confidant the Grand Vizier Bahadapur died at the Battle of Manipur, it upset him so that he died soon afterwards.
