Description

9.2 inches in diameter. Dated 1920 in Hebrew on the rim. Extremely heavy for it's size, you can't tell from the photos but the brass dish itself seems to be a "double layer", it is a very, very thick tray. Coupled with the large amounts of silver and copper inlay and you will be surprised just how heavy this is when you hold it in your hands. Incredible workmanship. The rim has various saying related to the holiday of Rosh Hashana, and the center depicts a pair of shofars intertwined with a menorah and the Ten Commandments. There are a few gem-colored paste stones left in the many deliberate hole-shaped depressions featured throughout the dish. I have never heard of, nor seen any Damascene item, made by Bezalel or otherwise, indicating a use for Rosh Hashana --- I'm guessing this dish would be for the apple and jar of honey.
Shown in the last photo is another Damascene dish with identical styled and engraved Hebrew verses on the rim: notice the estimate!
