In 1773, Charles was appointed professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolich; in the following year he was elected fellow of the royal Society of London and reported on Nevil Makelyne's determination of the mean density and mass of the earth from measurements taken in 1774-1776 at Schiehallion in Pertshire.
"A most useful work for biographical information and for showing the state of science is Charles Huttons's "Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary."-Dr Knight
GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE [March 1823] , "It has supplied all subsequent works of that description, and even the most voluminous Cyclopedias, with valuable materials, both in the sciences and in scientific biography."

Please
zoom in on
photos carefully
as they are part of the description. I am human and sometimes miss a thing or 2, but I
try to mention the book's main faults
. all of my books are VERY OLD and have 100+ years of wear to varying degrees
very good plus condition.... for its age
boards /covers -
very secure- looks like the front of volume 1 was re-attached [ see picture #12] some wear, mostly to the back of vol. 2 - very good for being
224 years old!
textblock
- pages very secure
outer joints
- pretty good volume 2, vol. 1 has cracking all the way up both front & back with the mentioned repair [pictures #11 and 12]
spine ends
- with wear, mostly to the bottom of vol 2 [ see picture 10]
tips
- a bit of wear for their age
inner hinges
- vol 1 good / see picture #9 for vol 2
pages
- generally in
very good & very clean
condition - just a few small spots, some water staining to the ff end papers of vol 1 / vol 2 missing its ffep
writing
- I did see 3 pages with pencil notes - I left them, and in the back of vol 2, on the free endpaper is 3/4 of a page of notes; names written on the title pages, I couldn't quite read them in full, one is J Thomas ____ Madras / some pencil numbers to the back free endpaper of vol. 1
rips /folds
- title page and the page after that [in vol 2] has 2 long rips starting at the gutter [pict.9] you can only see one rip, but there are 2 // only a hand full of very small rips and wee-tips folded throughout tboth volumes
other
- the spine of vol 2 is cracked, has 2 small splits between the labels, and has the most wear [ zoom in on photo] ; they smell a bit musty - dryer sheets in them for a while will help eliminate any smell
