The second Finnish commemorative coin in 2021 celebrates the centennial of the 1921 Compulsory Education Act.
School and education have been important stepping stones on Finland's way from a fledgling independent state to the modern European society they are today.
The subject of the commemorative coin is made up of semi-abstract and asymmetric shapes in various sizes. The obverse shows three children on their way to school, and the reverse  features a rooster, a well-known symbol of education in Finland, in relief.
The letters A, B and C are to the left, and the internet symbols to the right of the rooster. A computer mouse is shown in the rim below.
Enacted in 1921, the Compulsory Education Act states that all children aged 7 to 13 years must receive an education. Having just recently become independent, the young country could not afford to leave any part of the population’s potential unutilized.
During the hundred years that have gone by, Finland has developed from an obscure agrarian state into a country with high productivity and top technology. Without compulsory education and the best school system in the world this would not have been possible.
