A RARE AND IMPORTANT PAIR OF BRIS CUPS. Hamburg, 1822. Barrel shaped, on slightly raised round base with identical decoration and gilded interiors. Both beakers inscribed in Hebrew on body “Cup of Metzitzah” and on the other “Cup of blessing” The bases are inscribed in Hebrew as well, the one with the name of the owner: Moshe, son of Eleazar, of blessed memory, the other “In the year in which the announcer/forerunner of good [Moshiach, hopefully] will arrive. This last Hebrew sentence forms the equivalent of the Jewish year 5583 = 1822/23. Marked with the Hamburg mark for 1817-2. Marked on rim with maker Gottfried Hartwig Ebel (Schliemann, no.580). 3.7" tall and 3.9 oz.
