The Bahamani Sultanate was the first independent Islamic Kingdom in South India, also reaching into the central plains.
The empire was established by Turkic general Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah after revolting against the Delhi Sultanate of Muhammad bin Tughlaq.
The Bahamani capital was Ahsanabad (Gulbarga) between 1347 and 1425 when it was moved to Muhammadabad (Bidar).
Control of the Deccan was contested with the Vijayanagara Empire to the south.
The sultanate reached the peak of its power during the vizierate of Mahmud Gawan
(1466–1481)
.
The south Indian Emperor Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire defeated the last remnant of Bahamani Sultanate power in the early 1500s, after which the Bahamani Sultanate collapsed.
