This is an African Wodaabe necklace. I used to live in Africa and have seen many of these - probably from Mali. Hope this helps.

I'm glad to be of some help. It's really quite an interesting necklace in that it has elements of both the Wodaabe (a really interesting nomadic ethnic group and the Tuareg (the metal talisman - also nomadic ). I rarely see elements of both. My best guess would be that it is made for some protective purpose. It's a bit more elaborate than most I've seen. Both nomadic groups are found within the Niger, Mali area and talisman of this sort are quite common as they take on elements of the desert- the vast unknown. It's definitely worth spending a bit of time looking into these two very unique ethnic groups. It's a nice piece.

Previous Description: "The piece is leather (black & smooth) & brass (featuring dense verdigris) Accruements indicate that it's an older piece. (Verdigris forms on brass that has been exposed to the air or water for long periods of time.) The empty rings are most likely attachments for charms or, perhaps, medicinal herbs.
The Piece is 22" long; Couplings are 1.25"; the centerpiece is 2"; it weighs 39 grams. An online search using variations of "Primitive [South American, Native American, or African] Leather Tribal Charm Necklace," focusing on both web search & images, yielded much, both authentic & specious, but none resembled our piece in either aesthetics or specific points of function."
