    From JAMA:
Johann Schultes, one of the great German surgeons of the 17th century, illustrator and designer of instruments and bandages, is a familiar name in current hospital care for his description of the multiple-tailed or the Scultetus binder. In keeping with the practice of his day, he titled his most famous treatise Armamentarium Chirurgicum, or the hardware of the surgeon, and signed it with the Latin derivation of his name, Joannis Sculteti. Johann was born at Ulm on the Danube and studied at Padua under Fabricius ab Aquapendente and Adriaan van den Spieghel. He saw military service in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), and received a doctorate in medicine, surgery, and philosophy at Padua. He eventually settled in Ulm as the city physician, having practiced for a time in Padua and Vienna.
