    Description

    Acquired from an old family collection - this is a rare magnificent antique pouch fabricated out of copper silver and brass.  It is rare because these are only worn by males from prominent families - and are part of the marriage accoutrement for a man from a wealthy family.  These pouches carry important papers and items that are private and secret.  This is from Mali. Embellished with old trade beads and incised with a magic numbers square on the portion above the cowrie shell to protect the wearer.  The cowrie shell represents fertility and it is a talisman used to ensure having abundant children and prosperity.  This is an appropriate symbol to put on a pouch for a young man getting ready to be married. The maker signature can be seen in the last pic.  The smith who made this pouch was named "Ahmad".
    6 1/2" long not including the dangling beads. Really special and
    scarce. These are typically passed down from family to family and rarely are seen for sale on the "market".
